Tommy Simms

Tommy Simms, born in Dallas, Texas, passed away on February 27, 2017.  He came to California at the age of 3.  Tommie graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1961 and continued his education at Merritt College of Oakland receiving an Associate in Arts degree.  He attended John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where he received a Bachelor of Science degree and, attended Antioch School of Law in Washington D.C. where he received a Juris Doctor degree.

 

Tommy practiced law for ten years in Washington D. C. and had a broad background in a number of fields in both the public and private sectors.  He served as a loan disbursements officer for the World Bank and Associate Dean for Administration at Antioch School of Law both in Washington D.C.  He was Vice President and Controller at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina and Vice President for Administrative Affairs at Cal Poly University, Pomona, California.

 

Tommy retired in February 2008 from the University of California, Hastings College of Law in San Francisco where he had managerial responsibilities for a host of college programs and operations including admissions, technology, facilities management and career services.

 

Tommy is survived by sisters, Carolyn Spencer and Rosalyn Hannon, and a brother, Charles Simms. 

Tommy was a valued member of the Reunion Committee. The loss of Tommy’s participation and contributions as a member of the Committee for Class of 1961 will be sorely missed.

How sad to hear of Tommy's passing. He looks so vibrant in his photo and my memories of him in recent emails and at reunions are so strong that it's hard to believe that he's gone. I know,in body he IS gone; however--trite as it may sound--his spirit is living. May we all have as positive and lasting effect on others in our lifetime as he did in his!
