In Memory

Richard Nelson

Richard had recently retired from his family business (Oakland Metal Heat Treating) in Oakland, CA in early 2001 as I understand it, and apparently went on a cruise with his wife (Carolyn) and while on the cruise felt ill. Upon returning home to the East Bay (believe he lived in Pleasanton) I am told he saw a Doctor and was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. He may have lived all of six (6) months after learning of this diagnosis. His wife honored his wishes insofar as not telling people of his illness and he lived out the remainder of his life at home with his wife and son Christopher. It was only in early 2002 whereupon his wife advised his friends of what had happened, that I and others learned of his passing. A very nice Memorial of his life was held at The Chapel of the Chimes on the north end of Piedmont Ave. in Oakland, followed by refreshments and further celebration at the Family Residence in Pleasanton following the Chapel of the Chimes service. Richard (Dick to me) was a fellow Marine who served in Vietnam, was an avid Raider Fan and lived next door to John Gruden while Gruden was coaching the Raiders in the late 1990's/early 2000 period.
